More proof colleges are a universe unto themselves, untethered to the real world.
The dean of Georgetown University’s law school denounced one of his own professors and put him on leave pending an investigation into what liberals have deemed racist tweets.
It’s almost assured that professor Ilya Shapiro will be fired, given the tone of an email sent to the entire law school by Dean William Treanor, and considering how Treanor treated another prof in a similar situation.
The controversy surrounding Shapiro began last week.
Shapiro is a libertarian, and the executive director of the Georgetown Center for the Constitution.
Shapiro criticized President Joe Biden after he announced that he would exclude everyone except a black woman in filling the Supreme Court vacancy created by Justice Stephen Breyer’s retirement.
In one tweet, Shapiro noted, “Because Biden said he’s only consider[ing] black women for SCOTUS, his nominee will always have an asterisk attached. Fitting that the Court takes up affirmative action next term.”
But he did not stop there. Shapiro then gave Biden a recommendation.
The “objectively best pick” for the job, he tweeted, would be Judge Sri Srinivasan, chief judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington, the nation’s second most powerful court whose tenure is considered a stepping stone to a Supreme Court job.
Shapiro noted that Srinivasan checks two of Biden’s boxes: He’s a racial minority [Indian-American] and a “solid” leftist. The judge is also very smart, Shapiro added.
Yet instead of considering the best person, the professor noted, Biden will reject Srinivasan because he “alas doesn’t fit into latest intersectionality hierarchy so we’ll get [a] lesser black woman.”
As The Free Press reported, Shapiro was echoing the sentiment of 76 percent of Americans, who in a recent poll said Biden should pick the most qualified candidate, and not limit himself to one race and one sex.
As some in conservative media noted, Shapiro was openly proposing a racial minority and a leftist the Democrats would support – and not just another white guy.
In addition, conservative commentators also pointed that Shapiro has said publicly that former Judge Janice Rogers Brown, who herself was on the D.C. Circuit Court, was worthy of the Supreme Court.
That’s notable because Brown is black, and, as The Free Press reported recently, she almost didn’t get the circuit court appointment because then-Sen. Joe Biden filibustered her nomination.
Still, leftists lost it, and now Shapiro will likely lose his job.
In that email to the law school, Treanor noted that he had “heard the pain and outrage” of so many liberals under his tutelage.
Shapiro’s comments were “antithetical to the work that we do here every day to build inclusion, belonging, and respect for diversity.”
He then announced that Shapiro is on administrative leave, and an investigation is underway to determine if he violated school policies regarding “non-discrimination and anti-harassment.”
“Racial stereotypes about individual capabilities and qualifications remain a pernicious force in our society and our profession. I am keenly aware that our law school is not exempt. We will continue our work with students, staff, alumni, and faculty to put in place strategies, policies, and practices to strengthen our community and our commitment to justice and equality for all. And I remain committed to working with each of you to create a community where we can all thrive,” Treanor added.
The Washington Free Beacon noted that Treanor used similar language in announcing a probe into comments by Sandra Sellers, a law professor who was recorded commenting on the performance of black students.
“I hate to say this,” Sellers said on the tape, but “I end up having this angst every semester that a lot of my lower ones are Blacks — happens almost every semester. And it’s like, ‘Oh, come on.’ You know? You get some really good ones. But there are also usually some that are just plain at the bottom. It drives me crazy.”
Sellers was fired in March 2021.
In commenting on Sellers’ case last year, the author John K. Wilson, himself a progressive, noted that Treanor had no problem firing Sellers without due process, without any evidence she harbored racist views and in violation of Georgetown’s policies, to uphold his woke beliefs.
