Former Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, former President Donald Trump’s first national security adviser and one of his staunchest backers, has avoided the Cancel Culture mob.
University of Rhode Island President David Dooley opted not to forward a recommendation to the college’s trustees to revoke an honorary degree given to Flynn in 2014, according to the Associated Press.
The AP noted that Dooley sought a recommendation about Flynn from the university’s honorary degree committee. He received one, but the school has declined to make it public, a spokeswoman said.
As a consequence, Flynn retains the honor.
“The Board supports the president’s decision and no action will be taken at this time,” the spokeswoman, Linda Acciardo, said in a statement. “The degree stands.”
Flynn, a Rhode Island native, graduated from the university in 1981.
He was designated Trump’s national security adviser shortly after the 2016 election. He became the subject of an FBI probe after Trump took office, and was accused of lying to authorities about a conversation with Russia’s ambassador before Trump took office.
He pleaded guilty in 2017 to lying to FBI agents. But it was later revealed that agents initially believed Flynn did not lie to them, and that exculpatory evidence was withheld from Flynn’s defense team, according to an investigation by a special counsel appointed by former Attorney General William Barr. Documents later revealed that the FBI set a perjury trap for Flynn in order to discredit him.
Barr’s Justice Department later requested to drop the case and an appellate court agreed, overruling the trial’s judge’s refusal to do so.
Last September, an FBI agent revealed that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s office pressured Flynn, including threatening to prosecute his son, in order to extract the guilty plea. The agent told Barr’s investigators that Mueller’s office “pursued Flynn simply as a means to ‘get Trump.’”
Trump pardoned Flynn in November.
