LAKELAND, Fla. – A gas leak at Sleepy Hill Elementary School in Lakeland caused an evacuation and sent several adults to the hospital on Tuesday.

Around 11:35 AM, the Lakeland Fire Department (LFD) responded to reports of a propane and carbon monoxide leak in the school cafeteria. The building was evacuated as a precaution, and several people reported feeling dizzy and lightheaded.

Polk County Fire Rescue transported six adults to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Others experienced symptoms but declined transport.

Firefighters identified and contained the leak and then thoroughly ventilated the building. Air quality levels were monitored to ensure safety before allowing re-entry.

The scene was cleared, and the school resumed normal operations.
