GAO Acting on GOP Complaints About Biden Stopping the Wall, As More Republicans Sign-On

Federal watchdogs apparently got the message from Republicans in Congress, whose movement in support of funding the border wall is growing.

On Tuesday, the Epoch Times reported that the Government Accountability Office is investigating whether President Joe Biden had legal authorization to stop funding the wall along the Mexican border.

The Free Press reported last week that 40 Republican senators, including Florida Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, had asked the GAO to look into Biden’s day-one executive order halting the barrier supported by Congress and enacted by former President Donald Trump.

In addition, a second set of 71 GOP lawmakers on Monday submitted a letter asking to be included with the initial protesters.

The second group includes Florida Reps. , John Rutherford, Carlos Gimenez and Mario Diaz-Balart.

In their letter challenging Biden’s move, the senators asserted that Biden had “no unilateral authority to withhold funds” from the wall project, nor did he have the power “to ignore or amend a duly enacted law.”

Accordingly, Biden’s actions were unlawful, unconstitutional, and “an assault on Congress’s constitutional power of the purse,” the senators argued.

Additionally, “The rate of illegal crossings has surged, creating a crisis across our southern border,” for which Biden is responsible, they wrote.

The GAO told Epoch Times it had received the complaint and was looking into the issue. But agency officials declined to offer details of the probe.

Biden, in signing that order on his first day, declared the wall was a “waste of money,” and “not a serious policy solution.”

Yet both Border Patrol officials and the Mexican government have said that Trump’s border policies help stanch the flow of migrants into the U.S.

According to the Times, Missouri GOP Sen. Roy Blount said Biden should know better.

“He was in the Congress a long time. He knows it’s the Congress’s job to authorize how the money is spent and the president’s job to spend it efficiently,” said Blount.

Meanwhile, Trump told Fox News that Biden was out to destroy the country.

“You can’t take millions of people, they’ll have millions of people before this mess is over. We want people to come in, but they have to be able to help our country. They have to come in through merit and they have to come in legally,” he said.
