The left’s campaign to use the courts to obtain what they cannot get at the ballot box continues.
Liberals in Georgia seek to force pro-Trump U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene off the ballot this fall, claiming she is an “insurrectionist” because of alleged support for Jan. 6 rioters and therefore ineligible to serve under the 14th Amendment, which was adopted after the Civil War to keep former Confederates out of Congress.
The legal ploy has already failed once.
In North Carolina last month, Judge Richard Myers, appointed by former President Donald Trump, tossed a case by leftists to have Rep. Madison Cawthron kicked off the ballot.
The plaintiffs made the same argument there as they do against Greene. But the judge agreed with the argument of a lawyer for Cawthorn, who maintained that Congress through an 1872 law granted amnesty to people who allegedly participated in past or future “insurrections.”
On Monday, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Greene ally, spoke out about her case.
“There are a number of places where the left knows they can’t win the election with the voters. And so they’re trying to use a legal process to deprive voters of even being able to make a choice,” the Fort Walton Beach Republican told One America News.
“The irony is that they are doing it in the name of ‘saving democracy,’” he added. “So to save democracy, they have to tell voters they don’t get to vote for their congresswoman or their congressman.”
“It’s disgusting.”
Gaetz said a court should have blocked the case against Greene, which is now ongoing. He predicted Greene would ultimately prevail.
“She’s tougher than they are. She’ll come out of this even stronger,” said Gaetz.
But, he added, it’s time to consider federal legislation to stop this kind of backdoor, anti-democratic campaign.
“This is like Rwanda-stuff, saying that we’ve deemed you an ‘enemy of the state,’ so you can’t run for office. For goodness sakes, that should never happen in our America,” said Gaetz.
In the bigger picture, Gaetz added that the left’s push was “unquestionably” part of a “systemized strategy” to stop Republicans from raising red flags about 2020 or inadequate election security and integrity.
“The reason Democrats have to do this is that they don’t have an actual agenda to run on that’s popular with anyone,” he told OANN. “They’re using fear as a political tool.”
The congressman said the evidence could be seen in the Jan. 6 special committee, or the raising of the “ghosts of white supremacy.”
“It is a message. Not just to Marjorie Taylor Greene or Madison Cawthorn. But to everyone who is in our government or running for positions in our government: Don’t talk about these things, or we will turn the power of the regime against you.”
Gaetz predicted the tactic would backfire on Democrats, because it would expose them as being against democracy.
