ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Residents of the Childs Park neighborhood will receive a vital safety visit this Saturday, as St. Petersburg Fire Rescue and the American Red Cross team up to install free smoke alarms.

This proactive initiative aims to significantly reduce fire-related injuries and fatalities in Childs Park, an area identified as one of the most at-risk communities in Florida. According to data from the American Red Cross, Childs Park ranks No. 1 in Florida and No. 17 nationally for home fire risk, based on factors including fire history, proximity to fire stations, and socioeconomic conditions.

Recognizing the critical importance of early fire detection, firefighters and Red Cross volunteers will conduct a door-to-door campaign to install smoke alarms and ensure existing ones are functioning correctly. Common issues such as missing alarms, dead batteries, and outdated devices will be addressed.

“With only two minutes to escape a house fire, working smoke alarms are essential for providing the early warning needed to save lives,” says St. Petersburg Fire Rescue.

The canvassing effort will take place on:

WHEN: Saturday, March 29, 2025, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHERE: Childs Park Recreation Center 4301 13th Ave. S St. Petersburg, FL 33711 (Meet-up location for volunteers and media)

WHO:

  • Fire Rescue Chief Keith Watts
  • Council Member Corey Givens Jr., District 7
  • St. Petersburg Fire Rescue firefighters
  • Volunteers and staff from the American Red Cross

Residents are encouraged to welcome the firefighters and volunteers into their homes to take advantage of this life-saving service. The teams will provide free installations and valuable fire safety education to families throughout the neighborhood.
