A celebratory Fourth of July weekend at South Padre Island took a frightening turn for some beachgoers after reports of multiple shark attacks.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) confirmed that four people were either bitten or encountered a shark in the waters off Beach Access 14 near the Wanna Wanna Beach Bar and Grill on Thursday afternoon.

Witness estimates suggest the shark was around 6 feet long. Authorities believe it may be responsible for all the attacks.
- Two individuals were bitten, with one sustaining a “severe” leg injury.
- Two others encountered the shark but were not seriously injured.
- Lifeguards on the beach immediately took action, encouraging people to stay out of the water or remain in shallow depths. Helicopters and drones were also deployed to patrol the area for the shark.
The two victims with bite wounds were transported to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville. One received treatment and was released, while the other required airlift for further medical attention.

Shark attacks are uncommon in the area. The TPWD is investigating the incident to determine the species of shark involved and what might have caused the aggressive behavior.
Beachgoers are advised to stay alert and follow safety precautions when entering the water, such as avoiding swimming alone or in murky water, and staying clear of areas with known fishing activity.
