Former President Donald Trump’s Office of Management and Budget director has launched a toolkit to help parents identify and combat elements of Critical Race Theory in their children’s schools.

Critical Race Theory (CRT) does not “announce itself” or lay out plainly how it will indoctrinate students, Citizens for Renewing America President Russ Vought told the Daily Caller News Foundation, explaining that CRT operates much more subtly in conversations about diversity, equity, and systematic problems.

Because of this, Vought said, it can be hard for parents or school boards to pinpoint what must be dealt with.

CRT holds that America is fundamentally racist, yet it teaches people to view every social interaction and person in terms of race. Its adherents pursue “antiracism” through the end of merit, objective truth and the adoption of race-based policies.

Proponents of CRT defend the theory by saying that it critiques “how the social construction of race and institutionalized racism perpetuate a racial caste system that relegates people of color to the bottom tiers,” acknowledges that racism is not a “relic of the past,” and acknowledges that “legacy of slavery, segregation, and the imposition of second-class citizenship on Black Americans and other people of color continue to permeate the social fabric of this nation,” according to the American Bar Association.

The “Combatting Critical Race Theory In Your Community” toolkit seeks to equip parents to spot types of buzzwords and to make sure that “parents are courageously stepping forward to battle this in whatever setting that they have an opportunity,” Vought said.

“We want to make sure that they have a really strong, intellectual, foundation beneath their feet so that they feel prepared and that they can go forth and really win the argument from there,” the former OMB director told the DCNF.

“We had a lot of experience at OMB in the last administration when the president asked us to get rid of federally funded trainings of this nature,” Vought said. “We had to then figure out what were the buzzwords, how was it implemented? And that’s the same situation that school boards are dealing with, or parents who are trying to figure out whether it’s being taught in the school.”

The former OMB director said that while the toolkit is built for school boards and parents, other groups like state legislatures, federal legislators, and individuals dealing with Human Resources situations may find it helpful in combatting elements of CRT they encounter.

“The first part of it is intellectually, what’s the theory? What are the buzzwords? What’s some of the history,” Vought said of the toolkit.

“The next part is kind of a discussion about just good old fashioned activism and what that would look like to build your network to be able to have not just you, but an army of supporters. And the next part gets into the details of where to find additional resources to be able to literally go and impact the school board itself and, at times if you need to replace the school board, look at ways to do that,” he said.

Vought leads Citizens for Renewing America, an organization dedicated to renewing an “American consensus of a nation under God with unique interests worthy of defending that flow from its people, institutions, and history, where individuals’ enjoyment of freedom is predicated on just laws and healthy communities.”
