HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – In a video posted Tuesday morning, former Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren says he will seek re-election.

Warren, a Democrat, says his candidacy in the contest will appear on the November 2024 general election ballot.

“Today, I’m running for election as State Attorney to serve the people—all the people—of Hillsborough County. I’m running to keep our neighborhoods safe. I’m running to fight for victims and to make our criminal justice system better,” Warren said in the video.

While outlining his successes in office, Warren also highlights the suspension that made national headlines.

Florida Gov. DeSantis suspended Warren in August 2022, accusing him of “incompetence and willful defiance of his duties.” DeSantis’ executive order, in part, pointed to Warren signing a national organization’s statement about refraining from prosecuting abortion cases.

The governor also targeted Warren for signing a statement that criticized laws restricting care for transgender people. In addition, DeSantis cited Warren’s policies that could limit the prosecution of cases related to bicycle and pedestrian stops by police and certain low-level offenses.

In January, Warren announced he would not seek reelection for a third term.

“Donald Trump said he could shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue and get away with it. Ron DeSantis, trying to out-Trump Trump, shot democracy in the middle of our courthouse—and he’s gotten away with it,” said Warren at the time.

Warren, a former federal white-collar crimes prosecutor, did not announce specific plans for his professional future at the time.
