Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a former Republican presidential candidate, is set to teach a course at Yale University on the intricacies of running for political office.

Christie, who served as governor from 2010 to 2018 and made unsuccessful bids for the presidency in both 2016 and 2024, will lead a course titled “How to Run a Political Campaign” during the fall 2024 semester.

The course, which is offered as an elective and carries one credit, will be held once a week. According to the course description, it aims to tackle the increasing complexity of modern political campaigns, which rely more on technology, communication strategies, and navigating personal and professional challenges.

“Political campaigns in the 2020s are becoming more technology-dependent, more confusing and difficult from a communications perspective, and even more fraught with pitfalls and personal challenges,” the course description states. “When deciding whether to run for any office, all of these issues must be confronted in addition to the core considerations of issue positions, fundraising, and the most important question of all: If I do win, what do I want to accomplish and what kind of leader do I want to be?”

Christie, known for his outspoken criticism of former President Donald Trump, dropped out of the 2016 Republican primary after placing sixth in the New Hampshire primary and ended his 2024 campaign in January.

The course promises to offer students insights from professionals who have faced these challenges firsthand, both as candidates and as the experts who guide them to victory at various levels of government.

This move mirrors that of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who joined Columbia University in February 2023 as a Professor of Practice at the School of International and Public Affairs and a Presidential Fellow at the Columbia Worlds Project.
