Chris Christie, former governor of New Jersey, announced the end of his Republican presidential campaign at a town hall in New Hampshire on Wednesday night.

Christie, 61, has been under pressure to withdraw from the Republican presidential primary race as Trump critics seek to unite behind a viable alternative to the former president.

“We run campaigns to win. My goal has never been to be just a voice against the hate and the division of what our party has become under Donald Trump,” said Christie.

“I’ve always said that there came a point in time, in this race, where I couldn’t see a path to accomplishing that goal. That I would get out. And it’s clear to me tonight, that there isn’t a path for me to win the nomination. Which is why I’m suspending my campaign tonight for president of the United States,” said Christie.

Christie’s announcement came just hours before the fifth GOP presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle, featuring former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
