Geoff Duncan, the former Republican Lieutenant Governor of Georgia, has announced his endorsement of President Joe Biden’s 2024 re-election bid. This unexpected decision puts Duncan at odds with many of his GOP colleagues, who have remained steadfast in their support for former President Donald Trump despite his mounting legal troubles.
In a scathing op-ed published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Duncan laid out his reasons for supporting Biden over Trump.
The former lieutenant governor cited Trump’s “criminal defendant without a moral compass” status, referring to the former president’s ongoing legal battles, including the high-profile hush-money case involving adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Duncan also expressed his disappointment in seeing fellow Republicans “fall in line behind” Trump, arguing that the GOP will never rebuild until it moves on from the Trump era.
“Unlike Trump, I’ve belonged to the GOP my entire life. This November, I am voting for a decent person I disagree with on policy over a criminal defendant without a moral compass,” Duncan wrote in an op-ed published Monday in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
He firmly believes that the “healing of the Republican Party cannot begin with Trump as president,” a sentiment that is likely shared by a growing number of conservatives who have become disillusioned with the former president’s divisive rhetoric and controversial actions.
Furthermore, Duncan pointed to Trump’s infamous interview with Time magazine as another reason for his defection, suggesting that the former president’s words and conduct have disqualified him from holding the nation’s highest office.

Duncan’s endorsement of Joe Biden could have significant implications for the 2024 presidential race. As a prominent Republican figure in a crucial swing state, Duncan’s decision to support the Democratic incumbent could sway other conservatives to follow suit, potentially eroding Trump’s support among his core base.
Moreover, Duncan’s move may inspire other high-profile Republicans who have been personally slighted by Trump, such as former Attorney General William Barr and Senator Ted Cruz, to reconsider their allegiance to the former president. This could create a domino effect, leading to a broader defection of GOP voters and further complicating Trump’s path to the White House.
It is worth noting that Duncan’s endorsement of Biden comes with a caveat. He has expressed a desire for Republicans to work towards electing GOP congressional majorities to “block his second-term legislative agenda and provide a check and balance.”

This suggests that Duncan’s support for Biden is more of a tactical decision to prevent a second Trump term rather than a full-fledged embrace of the Democratic agenda.
