A former Boston Police Officer, James Carnes, 61, of Canton, has been sentenced in federal court for committing over $20,000 in overtime fraud. Carnes will serve two years of supervised release, including six months of home detention, and pay a $5,000 fine and restitution of $20,106.
Carnes pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit theft concerning programs receiving federal funds and embezzlement from an agency receiving federal funds.
Between 2016 and 2019, he submitted false overtime slips for hours he didn’t work at the Boston Police Department’s evidence warehouse.
Carnes routinely left early from his weekday “purge” overtime shift and worked significantly fewer hours than claimed on his Saturday “kiosk” overtime shift.
