Florida’s Citizens Property Insurance Corp. saw its policy count surpass 1.252 million last week, marking a continued increase in customers.
This growth comes even as the state-backed insurer plans to reduce its policy count to under 1 million through a “depopulation” program by year-end.
Citizens, originally intended as an insurer of last resort, has become the state’s largest insurer due to financial struggles in the private market.

The depopulation program aims to shift policies back to private insurers, but this effort is not expected to start until October, after the peak of hurricane season.
