The fight over a proposed constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights in Florida is attracting significant financial support from both sides. The Floridians Protecting Freedom committee, which supports the amendment, raised $417,410 from August 31 to September 6, including a $250,000 donation from the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida.

The committee now has around $22.68 million in its coffers.

Meanwhile, the opposition group, Florida Voters Against Extremism, raised $208,902 during the same period, with a $100,000 contribution from the Diocese of Palm Beach.

The proposed amendment, known as Amendment 4, would enshrine abortion rights in the Florida Constitution up until fetal viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health.

Supporters launched the initiative last year following the state’s passage of a law banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.
