A Florida woman has pleaded guilty to charges related to a migrant smuggling operation that resulted in the tragic deaths of 16 people, including young children. Yaquelin Dominguez-Nieves, 26, of Sebring admitted her role in the conspiracy that led to the fatal voyage in November 2022.
According to court documents, Dominguez-Nieves, who had entered the United States illegally herself, collected over $11,500 from families in South Florida desperate to bring their relatives from Cuba. She then transferred the funds to an accomplice in Cuba who organized the ill-fated journey.

Approximately 18 migrants boarded a small fishing vessel with no life jackets and a captain who, according to survivors, was inexperienced. Tragically, the vessel sank about 30 miles offshore, leaving only two survivors. Among the victims were children ranging in age from nine months to seven years old, and two 16-year-olds.
“This case is a stark reminder of the dangers of illegal migrant smuggling,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Michael S. Davis. “The individuals who orchestrate these ventures prioritize profit over human life, with devastating consequences.”

Dominguez-Nieves faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, with a mandatory minimum of five years, for her role in the conspiracy. Sentencing is scheduled for April 11th in Miami.
