In a move aimed at solidifying Florida’s position as a leader in space exploration, three of the state’s top universities have formally joined forces to create a powerhouse space research consortium.
Leaders from the University of Florida, the University of Central Florida, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University gathered at the Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday to sign an agreement establishing the Florida University Space Research Consortium.
This partnership, spearheaded by Space Florida, the state’s aerospace agency, seeks to foster collaboration and innovation in space research and policy, ensuring that Florida remains at the forefront of the space industry.
“Not Battling, But Building”
“This is about collaboration, not competition,” said Embry-Riddle President Barry Butler during the signing ceremony. “We recognize that the future of space exploration lies in working together, not against each other.”
Governor Ron DeSantis and Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nunez, who chairs the Space Florida board, were present at the event and expressed their strong support for the consortium.

“With this consortium and the leadership of our university partners, Florida is poised to become not only the launch capital of the world but the aerospace capital of the world,” Lieutenant Governor Nunez proclaimed.
The consortium will leverage the unique strengths of each university:
- University of Florida: Expertise in engineering, agriculture, and life sciences.
- University of Central Florida: Renowned for its space-related programs and research facilities.
- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University: A global leader in aerospace education and research.
By combining their resources and expertise, these institutions aim to:
- Attract top talent: Draw leading researchers and students to Florida.
- Secure research funding: Increase competitiveness for federal and private grants.
- Drive innovation: Develop cutting-edge technologies and solutions for space exploration.
- Influence policy: Contribute to the development of space policy at the state and national levels.
