Florida’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.3% in June for the third consecutive month, according to a report released by the Florida Department of Commerce. The state’s labor force, however, shrank by 13,000 individuals between May and June, largely attributed to baby boomers entering retirement.
Despite the decreased labor force participation, the number of unemployed individuals remained steady at 361,000. Jimmy Heckman, the department’s chief of workforce statistics and economic research, emphasized the ongoing strength of workforce participation among individuals aged 25 to 54.
While the leisure and hospitality sector experienced the most significant job losses in June, primarily in hotels and food services, the overall number of positions in this category still exceeds June of the previous year.
The construction, education and health services, and trade, transportation, and utilities sectors saw employment gains.
Florida’s unemployment rate continues to be lower than the national average, which stood at 4.1% in June.
