Florida Governor Ron DeSantis unveiled a new initiative this week aimed at providing tax relief to residents while promoting Second Amendment rights. Dubbed “Second Amendment Summer,” the tax holiday will allow Floridians to purchase firearms, ammunition, and related accessories tax-free for over a month, from Memorial Day through the Fourth of July.

The move is expected to save residents an estimated $8 million on gun-related purchases.

The governor framed the tax holiday as part of a broader effort to ease financial burdens on Floridians while supporting constitutional rights.

“We are unveiling the Second Amendment Summer tax holiday, so from Memorial Day to the Fourth of July, you can get your ammunition, your firearms, and your accouterments tax-free in the state of Florida,” DeSantis said.

The tax exemption applies to a wide range of firearm-related items, including charging handles, cleaning kits, holsters, optics, pistol grips, and stocks. However, it does not extend to gun-related clothing or apparel.

Notably, the inclusion of bump stocks—devices that allow semi-automatic rifles to fire rapidly—remains unclear.

Bump stocks were banned by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) in 2018, but the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the classification last year. DeSantis has previously opposed bans on both bump stocks and pistol braces.

The “Second Amendment Summer” initiative aligns with DeSantis’ ongoing efforts to expand gun rights in Florida. Since taking office, the governor has championed policies aimed at strengthening Second Amendment protections, including the signing of a permitless carry law in 2023. The tax holiday further solidifies Florida’s reputation as a state that prioritizes gun rights.

While it remains uncertain whether the tax holiday will become an annual or permanent policy, Florida gun owners will have the opportunity to take advantage of significant savings this summer.

The initiative underscores the state’s commitment to both tax relief and Second Amendment advocacy, setting the stage for continued debate over gun rights and public safety in the Sunshine State.
