Florida State University is seeking approval to expand its ambitious renovation of Doak Campbell Stadium, using $25 million in cost savings to broaden the scope of the ongoing project—without increasing the overall bond amount previously approved.

The State University System’s Board of Governors will consider FSU’s revised plan during a scheduled meeting Wednesday, according to agenda documents released this week.

In 2023, the Board approved issuing $265 million in bonds for the project, which initially focused on revamping seating on the west side and in the south end zone of the historic football stadium. The project, managed by the Florida State University Athletics Association (FSUAA), is now approximately 75% complete, with major construction milestones already achieved.

“According to FSU, the project is nearly 75% complete and has achieved estimated cost savings of approximately $25 million,” the meeting agenda item states.

FSU is now requesting that the Board amend the original bond resolution to allow those savings to be reinvested into additional improvements throughout the stadium. These include:

  • Installation of a new jumbotron
  • Renovations in other parts of the stadium beyond the originally designated west and south sections
  • Additional enhancements to elevate the fan experience and overall facility quality

The revised proposal does not seek additional funding and remains within the original $265 million bond ceiling.

“The FSUAA would like to expand the project scope to include, among other things, a new jumbotron and conduct renovations throughout the stadium,” the agenda notes.

Doak Campbell Stadium, home to the FSU Seminoles football team, is undergoing one of the most extensive upgrades in its history, aimed at modernizing the fan experience, improving accessibility, and maintaining competitiveness among elite college football programs.

The university has framed the project as a critical investment in its athletic infrastructure, one that supports both student-athletes and the broader university community.

The revised proposal will be reviewed during the Board of Governors’ meeting on March 27, with approval needed to proceed with the updated project scope.

If approved, the additional renovations could be completed concurrently with the final phases of the original construction, minimizing further disruption and leveraging already-mobilized construction teams.
