The Florida Silver Alert system proved its effectiveness this week when a 72-year-old man with dementia was safely located and reunited with his family after traveling over 260 miles from his home.
Gary Louis Floros of Spring Hill, Florida, was the subject of a Silver Alert issued by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office. Thanks to a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the alert, which included a description of Floros and his vehicle, was broadcast statewide and displayed on dynamic highway signs.

FHP Troopers Respond to Calls
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) received multiple calls from individuals who spotted Floros’ grey Ford vehicle traveling on Interstate 10 in Jackson County.
Troopers located the vehicle and made contact with Floros. Although he was coherent, they determined that he was confused and disoriented, making it unsafe for him to continue driving.
Floros was transported to a local hospital and later reunited with his relieved family.
Silver Alert System a Success
This incident highlights the vital role of the Florida Silver Alert system in locating missing individuals with cognitive impairments. The quick response of FHP troopers and the public’s vigilance, aided by the widespread dissemination of information through the alert system, ensured Floros’ safe return.
