The Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA) proudly announces that Jennifer Miller, Animal Control Officer with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, has been named the 2024 Florida Sheriffs Association Civilian of the Year. This prestigious award, sponsored by the Florida Sheriffs Risk Management Fund, recognizes civilians employed at Florida Sheriff’s offices who demonstrate exemplary service and selflessness.

“The selflessness and bravery that Officer Miller demonstrated make her a deserving recipient of the 2024 Florida Sheriffs Association Civilian of the Year award,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. “Her actions reflect what it means to serve with honor and purpose. She’s one of the reasons why Polk County is such a great place to live, work, and play.”

On June 26, 2023, while patrolling Walker Road in Lakeland, Officer Miller encountered a vehicle overturned in a ditch with three teenagers trapped inside. Their attempt to pass another car had resulted in the vehicle flipping and landing upside down in approximately 2-3 feet of water. While two teenagers managed to escape, one remained trapped, unconscious and submerged in the water.

Demonstrating extraordinary courage, Officer Miller entered the water and rescued the trapped teen, ensuring all three teenagers received timely medical attention at Lakeland Regional Health. Despite their injuries, which included lacerations, concussions, and bacterial infections, the teens made full recoveries thanks to Officer Miller’s quick thinking and heroic actions.

Beyond this act of heroism, Miller is known for her dedication and service as an animal control officer. She mentors new members, shares her knowledge generously, and consistently puts the needs of her community first.

“Jennifer Miller, an exemplary Animal Control Officer, truly represents the spirit of this award,” said FSA President and Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell. “Her exceptional leadership and steadfast commitment to her community, both on and off the job, are commendable. We are honored to acknowledge her outstanding efforts with this award.”

Officer Miller is renowned for her exceptional customer service and unwavering dedication to her community and the welfare of animals. Her commitment to improving the lives of both people and animals makes her the ideal recipient of the Civilian of the Year award.
