As Major Hurricane Milton approaches Florida, with forecasts predicting devastating storm surge, high winds, and severe inland flooding, U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Rick Scott (R-FL) have called on President Joe Biden to approve Florida’s request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration.

The declaration would provide federal support to the state as it braces for the hurricane’s impact, particularly in light of the recent damage from Hurricane Helene.

In a letter to President Biden, the senators emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast as a major hurricane. The storm’s destructive winds, torrential rains, and storm surge could significantly impact communities still recovering from Hurricane Helene.

“Ensuring that the state has access to the federal resources it needs is imperative to protecting Floridians, property, and our communities,” the senators wrote. “As such, we request that you promptly approve Governor DeSantis’s request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration.”

The full letter stresses the need for immediate federal assistance to prepare for the storm and mitigate potential damage.

The senators’ plea underscores the critical need for federal resources to support Florida in the face of back-to-back hurricanes, highlighting the state’s heightened vulnerability and the importance of swift federal action.
