The Senate on Monday tweaked a bill that, in part, could give Gov. Ron DeSantis authority to shape the Florida High School Athletic Association Board of Directors.

Senators voted 29-10 to approve the bill (HB 225), which passed the House last month.

Changes made by the Senate will send the bill back to the House.

The House sought to shrink the FHSAA board from 16 to nine members, with the governor authorized to appoint eight of the members.

But the Senate changes would require the FHSAA board to have 13 members, with the governor appointing eight. Also, the Senate changes would allow two members from public schools and two from non-public schools.

Those board members would have to be elected by “school representative members” from different regions.

Also, the state education commissioner or a designee of the commissioner would sit on the board. Sen. Jay Collins, a Tampa Republican who sponsored the bill, said issues that led to the proposed changes have been “brewing for a while.”
