A new state law restricting abortions after six weeks of pregnancy has resulted in a significant decrease in the number of procedures performed in Florida. Data reveals a nearly 13% drop in abortions during the first eight months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2022 and 2023.
44,771 abortions were reported in 2024 as of September 2nd, down from over 51,000 in previous years.
The six-week abortion limit took effect on May 1st, following a Florida Supreme Court ruling. This change in law seems to be the primary factor behind the observed decline in abortion numbers.

In addition to the overall decrease, Florida has also seen a significant drop in the number of out-of-state residents obtaining abortions within the state.
The majority of abortions performed in Florida continue to occur in the first trimester of pregnancy. Only a small number are performed in the second or third trimester, primarily due to fetal abnormalities.
