The U.S. transportation system has faced one debacle after another under President Joe Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
But Rep. Greg Stuebe is trying to fix one small portion of that.
In an email to constituents on Sunday, the Sarasota Republican noted that on Friday he filed the ‘‘Fast Lane for Youths,’’ or FLY, Act to promote easier access to airline flights for families.
The congressman said his bill, which was filed with the holiday travel season in mind, would expedite gate passes and flight access procedures for caregivers, parents, and guardians who are accompanying minors as well as passengers who need assistance to their flights.

“In a stunning display of bureaucratic absurdity, current TSA [Transportation Security Administration] policies do not provide Pre-Check privileges for gate passes even when the passenger and escorts all have been screened through the Pre-Check program,” Steube said in a statement.
“Parents, guardians, and caregivers who are assisting passengers through the airport should be able to join them in TSA’s Pre-Check processing line, so long as they are already Pre-Check qualified. My legislation provides a simple legislative fix to allow a more expedient process through the airport for many families this holiday season,” Steube added.
Steube’s bill would require the Federal Aviation Administration and the TSA to create a system to ensure up to two gate passes are provided to caregivers, parents, and guardians who are already qualified for TSA Pre-Check, to the same extent as such status would be noted on a ticket.
It tells the public something about the Biden administration’s priorities when the first query under the FAQs for the Pre-Check system says, “Can I apply for TSA PreCheck with a non-binary gender and gender non-conforming identity document on the TSA PreCheck application?”
