Last week, Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida floated the idea of Colorado GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert becoming the new speaker of the House.
But at least tens of thousands of people on X want Gaetz himself to take the reins.
The idea of who the next House leader will be is becoming more prominent as pressure grows on GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Johnson took over last year after Gaetz led the effort to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
Gaetz, a Fort Walton Beach Republican, insisted that McCarthy violated the rules he had helped establish to get the job.

But Johnson, in recent weeks, has backtracked from his conservative record and caved to Democrats in both the House and Senate.
The most recent example came Saturday, when Johnson muscled through a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine, even though most Republicans opposed it. Upon passage, leftist Democrats waved the Ukrainian flag in triumph.
The measure passed even though Johnson had committed to not do so without legislation to enhance security of America’s southern border.
Prior to the vote, Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene filed a resolution to force Johnson out. Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie has endorsed it. Sen. Rand Paul also said Johnson must go after he ushered in the renewal of federal warrantless spying provisions.

In his comments last week, Gaetz said he was not yet ready to send Johnson packing because he worried it could adversely affect the GOP’s slim majority.
But, he told Newsweek, “We’re not going to surrender that accountability, particularly in a time when we’re seeing America’s interest subjugated to foreign interests abroad.”
When reporters asked about Boebert taking over, Gaetz replied, “Ms. Boebert could do better.”
Yet, many say the same about Gaetz.
Journalist Simon Ateba issued the following to his 682,000 followers last week: “If you would like Matt Gaetz (@mattgaetz) to be the new Republican speaker of the House, simply like this post.”

As of Sunday, more than 53,000 X users had liked Ateba’s post.
Among the replies, an X account called The Hole Tweet posted a poll of potential new speakers. The poll, viewed by more than 5,600 users, included Gaetz, Johnson, Massie, and “Walmart Obama.”
Gaetz was the top choice, with 57%. Johnson was last, with just 13%.
