Rep. Matt Gaetz said Wednesday that the Biden administration needs to step up action to interdict an anticipated mass migration of Haitians by sea.
Haiti, long a hotbed of chaos, corruption, and dysfunction, descended further down that scale on Monday when Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned. The nation’s government collapsed, and criminal gangs now control 80% of the capital, Port au Prince, according to CNN.
Those gangs have reportedly opened maximum security prisons and released 4,000 inmates.

In an interview with News Nation, Gaetz predicted a flotilla of “boat people,” as was seen back in the 1980s.
The Fort Walton Beach Republican said if the U.S. interdicts such travelers in international waters, then they can be ferried back to Haiti and not become part of the immigration system.
If they make it to land, however, most likely in Florida, then they could claim asylum, and most likely stay as guests of President Joe Biden and his open-borders policies.
“I just don’t want southeast Florida to become Haiti,” said Gaetz. He added that such a situation would create a “huge burden” on the jails, schools, and hospitals in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties.
“The violence that you see from some of these folks is horrendous,” said Gaetz.
Gaetz said Biden must declare a “mass migration over water” in order to have justification to deploy the U.S. Navy to stop the anticipated wave of Haitians.
“You’re looking at a massive impact on the United States and one that is preventable, if Joe Biden would take the appropriate action to put those naval vessels in play,” said Gaetz.
