Rep. Matt Gaetz is circulating a plan to exonerate former President Donald Trump of any involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.
So far, more than two dozen of his fellow Republicans have signed on.
According to the conservative website Trending Politics, the Fort Walton Beach Republican emailed a draft resolution that declares the position of the House of Representatives is that Trump “did not engage in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or give aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

“You are receiving this email because your boss endorsed President Trump, and we would love to have your support as an original cosponsor before we send the resolution and the list of sponsors to the former President,” the email from Gaetz’s team read.
It was sent to other Republican lawmakers.
“This resolution is a no-brainer,” it added, “controversial only to the most extreme of the far-left – and a statement of fact that every single Republican can be expected to support.”
“If the left has the courage to interfere in our elections and weaponize the judicial system against our brethren,” the email continued, “we must have the courage to express what is self-evident.”

The Daily Mail, which first reported on Gaetz’s resolution, noted that 27 GOP lawmakers have agreed to co-sponsor the document.
Among them are Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Andy Biggs of Arizona, Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota, and Gary Palmer of Alabama.
