The latest elections in Venezuela have intensified the country’s political crisis, with Nicolás Maduro declaring victory amidst widespread allegations of fraud and international condemnation.
U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL-01) issued a statement Monday condemning Nicolás Maduro’s declaration of victory in Venezuela, saying, “Despite losing the election badly, Maduro declared himself the winner. He is an illegitimate dictator. We stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela and their diaspora worldwide in calling for an end to his oppressive regime.”
“It’s a sad reality that while a nation can vote its way into socialism, it almost always has to fight its way out,” said Gaetz.

On election night, Maduro, the incumbent president, announced his victory, claiming a mandate to continue his presidency. However, the opposition and numerous international observers have reported significant irregularities, including voter intimidation, ballot stuffing, and manipulation of the electoral rolls. Juan Guaidó, the opposition leader, has rejected the results, labeling the election as a sham. “This was not a free or fair election,” Guaidó stated in a press conference. “The people of Venezuela deserve better, and we will not recognize this fraudulent outcome.”
The international community has reacted swiftly. The United States, European Union, and several Latin American countries have refused to recognize Maduro’s victory. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a statement condemning the election, calling it “a travesty of democracy” and urging for new, transparent elections to be held.

The election comes at a time when Venezuela is grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis. The economy, already in freefall, has been further strained by the political turmoil. Basic necessities such as food, medicine, and fuel are in short supply, and hyperinflation has rendered the local currency almost worthless.
Millions of Venezuelans have fled the country in recent years, creating a diaspora that continues to advocate for change from abroad. Protests have erupted in major cities worldwide, with Venezuelan expatriates demanding international intervention and support for the opposition.
Despite the adverse conditions, the opposition is not backing down. Guaidó and his supporters are calling for continuous protests and civil disobedience. They are also seeking increased international pressure on the Maduro regime through sanctions and diplomatic isolation.
