Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida on Tuesday offered a solution to the debate over how to fund the competing demands from overseas for America’s military hardware.

The Fort Walton Beach Republican told talk-radio host Lars Larson that the U.S. should defund the United Nations to back Israel’s security.

On Monday, GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson announced on X that he would allow individual votes this week on military aid funding to support Israel against Hamas, Ukraine against Russia, and to “strengthen our allies in the Indo-Pacific,” meaning Taiwan.

During the interview, Gaetz suggested President Joe Biden fears this because he doesn’t want to consider the support for Israel as a stand-alone bill.

“I believe that Joe Biden believes that if he signs an Israel-only bill that he will lose Michigan,” said Gaetz.

Then Gaetz offered a solution.

He noted that the proposed $20 billion to shore up Israel is about the same amount as the U.S. “contribution” to fund the U.N.

“How about we defund the U.N., which participated in the attack on Israel and use that to ensure Hamas is defeated and Iran is deterred?,” said Gaetz.

“I’m sympathetic to the plight of Israel. They’re our ally in a pretty dangerous neighborhood. But I don’t think it makes us stronger to borrow money from China to give it to Israel.”

Gaetz also noted that U.S. taxpayers routinely end “funding all sides of every war in the Middle East,” as the American military over the weekend was shooting down missiles from Iran that were procured because Biden ended sanctions on Iran and opened a long-closed fiscal spigot.
