Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna wants to block U.S. taxpayers’ money from flowing to the United Nations until it can summon the courage to condemn the attack by Hamas that killed more than 1,400 Israelis.

Last week, according to the website Florida Daily, Luna, a Clearwater Republican, introduced a bill that would block all funding to the United Nations Human Rights Council until the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly adopt a resolution condemning Hamas for the vicious Oct. 7 terror attacks against Israel.

The bill had 17 co-sponsors as of Sunday, including Florida GOP Reps. Greg Steube of Sarasota and Daniel Webster of Clermont. One Democrat also backs the bill, Rep. Jared Moskowitz of Broward County.

“It should not be a heavy lift for the UN, which claims to promote global human rights, to pass a resolution condemning what will go down in history as one of the deadliest attacks against the Jewish people,” Luna told Florida Daily.

“The United States should not fund the UN Human Rights Council until it stops targeting our closest ally. The UN must unequivocally condemn Hamas’s utter disregard for human life and the terror they are inflicting on Israelis and the innocent Palestinians they use as human shields.”

“Until this institution can defend objective human rights, not subjective ideological bias, it is a scourge to the values it claims to champion,” she added.

Luna noted that the UN Human Rights Council has a “long history” of anti-Semitic actions and disproportionately targeting Israel. But the agency also “consistently turns a blind eye” to human rights abuses committed by numerous other countries, Florida Daily noted.

“The hypocrisy in all of this is while the UNHRC lectures Israel on defense, China (one of their HRC members) is actively putting Muslims in concentration camps,” Luna said. “It’s time they save the world their virtue-signaling and we defund them.”

Two recent actions offer evidence of Luna’s criticism of the UN.

Last month, according to the Associated Press, the UN General Assembly adopted a nonbinding resolution calling for a “humanitarian truce” in Gaza. That was the first United Nations response to the war and came as Israel was mounting an offensive to retaliate for the slaughter by Hamas.

The UN approved the resolution by a 120-14 vote with 45 abstentions. Yet the body also rejected a Canadian proposal, which was supported by the United States, to unequivocally condemn Hamas’ terrorist attacks.

Meanwhile, last week, the UN voted overwhelmingly for the U.S. to end its economic embargo of the communist government in Cuba.

The resolution, which drew the support of 187 nations, was adopted for the 31st consecutive year. Only the U.S. and Israel opposed the measure.
