U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) has issued a formal call to action, sending letters to police chiefs throughout Florida’s 17th congressional district, urging them to enroll their departments in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) 287(g) program.
The move comes following President Trump’s Executive Order 14159, “Protecting People Against Invasion,” which authorizes ICE to collaborate with state and local law enforcement agencies under section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

This program allows participating agencies to perform specific immigration enforcement functions under ICE supervision.
“After four years of disastrous border and immigration policies under the former Biden administration, the American people overwhelmingly entrusted President Trump to secure our border and protect the American homeland from the violence that criminal illegal aliens have brought to our country,” stated Rep. Steube. “This is not just a duty for our law enforcement and border patrol partners at the southern and northern borders, but for every single law enforcement agency in Florida and the United States.”
Steube’s initiative is further fueled by the recent arrest of an undocumented individual in Sarasota on charges of assault and sexual battery.

In his letters, the Congressman is requesting that police chiefs within his district disclose their agency’s current enrollment status or intentions regarding the 287(g) program. Additionally, he has asked for a comprehensive report detailing any federal grants or funding their departments are currently receiving or seeking.
The Congressman emphasized the importance of local law enforcement collaboration with ICE in addressing the ongoing migrant crisis and restoring national security.
Steube’s office highlighted the significant increase in illegal border crossings during the Biden administration, stating that Border Patrol encountered more than three times as many illegal immigrants crossing the southern border than during the first Trump administration.

They also pointed to the Trump administration’s Executive order 14159, claiming it has led to the “largest reduction in illegal migration in American history,” with illegal entries reportedly falling to their lowest level since 1968.
