U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) has filed an article of impeachment against Kimberly A. Cheatle, Director of the United States Secret Service (USSS), accusing her of dereliction of duty in failing to ensure the safety of former President Donald Trump, the leading 2024 Presidential candidate.
This move follows an incident where the USSS’s actions enabled a shooter to target and injure Trump in an attempted assassination.
“The Secret Service prides itself as ‘one of the most elite law enforcement agencies in the world.’ The events that unfolded in Butler, Pennsylvania, were both an international embarrassment and an inexcusable tragedy,” said Rep. Steube.

“Today, I am exercising our Congressional oversight authority by filing an article of impeachment against Director Cheatle for her failure to prevent the assassination attempt on President Trump. As she admitted in a recent interview, the ‘buck stops with me.’ Multiple reports confirm that a Secret Service sniper had the would-be assassin in his sights for nearly 20 minutes. How was the shooter not neutralized before firing?”
“Every supervisor in that chain of command should be fired immediately, starting with the Director. An American hero is dead and several others severely wounded due to the Secret Service’s failure to protect President Trump. Additionally, multiple reports indicate that Trump’s detail repeatedly requested additional resources for safety and were denied. All in the chain of command, including the Director, should be held accountable,” Steube concluded.
Steube’s decision was further solidified by Cheatle’s testimony before the Oversight Committee, where she failed to answer questions adequately and refused to resign.
Reports have surfaced that the Secret Service was aware of a threat to President Trump before he took the stage, with agents identifying the shooter as a person of interest over an hour before shots were fired. Furthermore, a USSS counter-sniper reportedly had the shooter in his sights with a direct line of sight to Trump’s stage 20 minutes before the incident occurred.

Despite being grazed by a bullet that injured his ear, President Trump survived the assassination attempt. However, the attack resulted in the tragic death of rally attendee Corey Comperatore and injuries to other attendees.
Under 18 U.S.C. § 3056, the Secret Service is responsible for providing protection to former Presidents and major Presidential candidates.
