Florida Rep. Byron Donalds is pushing back against those promoting the Green New Deal, specifically wind and solar, as the only “green energy” options.

The Naples Republican recently introduced a resolution that calls on the House to support the expansion of nuclear energy across the country.

Donalds explained his thinking in a recent interview with the group Conservative Coalition for Climate Solutions.

“A lot of young people who have been conditioned — I’m choosing my words properly — they’ve been conditioned to believe that the only possible way to save the planet is with the Green New Deal, with solar panels, with wind turbines,” Donalds said.

“If you actually want to save the planet, what you need is an emission-less energy source that at the same time is plentiful, relatively cheap, and accessible, and that is how I got to nuclear policy.”

“The toughest part is that we have to unwind the dogma around nuclear,” he added.

Donalds made the case for more nuclear power with his 13-page resolution, introduced last month. The measure includes 69 specific reasons explaining the benefits of nuclear energy.

Among them, Donalds noted that 20% of U.S. energy already comes from nuclear, and that it is safer, more reliable, and less consuming of land than solar or wind projects.

He also pointed out energy companies could repurpose dying fossil fuel plants for nuclear, creating jobs that pay on average 50% more than those in the solar or wind industries.

Donalds argued in the document that the House should advocate expansion of nuclear energy, among other reasons, to meet future domestic electricity needs, to take advantage of advances in nuclear technology, to enhance America’s energy self-reliance and resiliency, and to help the economy, especially some small businesses.

Fellow Florida Rep. Kat Cammack of Gainesville is among the GOP lawmakers who have signed on to Donalds’ resolution.
