A bipartisan, bicameral coalition of Florida lawmakers, led by Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL), is pushing to relocate NASA Headquarters to Brevard County, Florida. Donalds has introduced H.R. 2422, the “Consolidating Aerospace Programs Efficiently at Canaveral Act” (CAPE Canaveral Act), which would mandate the move within one year of enactment.

The bill has garnered significant support from Florida representatives, including Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL), Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-FL), Aaron Bean (R-FL), Vern Buchanan (R-FL), Scott Franklin (R-FL), Carlos Giménez (R-FL), Brian Mast (R-FL), Cory Mills (R-FL), John Rutherford (R-FL), María Elvira Salazar (R-FL), Darren Soto (D-FL), and Daniel Webster (R-FL).

The CAPE Canaveral Act is the House companion bill to Sen. Ashley Moody’s (R-FL) S. 1013, also co-led by Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL).

Congressman Donalds emphasized the historical significance of Cape Canaveral in human space flight, stating, “The long and storied legacy of human space flight is inextricably linked with Cape Canaveral, Florida. Home to the Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral has been the launch-site of some of the most consequential scientific breakthroughs in human history. It’s time to bring NASA Headquarters to Florida’s aptly-named ‘Space Coast’ and I’m proud to lead my colleagues in this important, bipartisan, and bicameral initiative for our nation.”

Key Arguments for Relocation:

  • Proximity to Launch Sites: Relocating to Florida, home to Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, would streamline operations and improve coordination.
  • Geographical Advantage: Florida’s location near the equator provides an ideal launch site due to Earth’s rotational speed.
  • Existing Infrastructure: Florida’s robust aerospace ecosystem would be further strengthened by the move.
  • Economic Boost: The relocation is expected to bring significant economic benefits, including job creation and increased investment.
  • Experienced Workforce: Moving the headquarters would retain experienced aerospace professionals within Florida’s space community.
