A prominent plastic surgeon in Gulf Breeze, Florida, is facing homicide and negligent manslaughter charges after his wife suffered a fatal overdose during a cosmetic procedure in his office. Benjamin Jacob Brown, 41, was arrested Monday following an investigation into the death of his wife, Hillary Ellington Brown, 33.

According to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a medical emergency at the Restore Plastic Surgery clinic on November 21, 2023. Upon arrival, they found Hillary Brown unresponsive and suffering a seizure while undergoing multiple procedures.

Witnesses reported that Hillary had taken a “plethora of pills” before the operation and even participated in the procedures herself. The Florida Department of Health found that Brown’s actions during the procedures were negligent and “haphazard,” contributing to the fatal overdose.

Disturbingly, staff members revealed that when they asked if they should call 911, Brown allegedly instructed them to “wait” or said “no.” It wasn’t until nearly 20 minutes after the seizure began that emergency services were finally contacted.

The medical examiner’s report indicated that Hillary’s cause of death was complications from lidocaine toxicity, a local anesthetic commonly used in cosmetic procedures.

Brown, a Georgetown-educated surgeon, had been practicing in the area for several years. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local medical community and raised concerns about patient safety and oversight in private medical practices.

The Florida Department of Health has suspended Brown’s medical license, citing his “unwillingness or inability” to provide appropriate care to patients. The case is currently under investigation, and Brown is awaiting trial.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to strict medical protocols and prioritizing patient safety above all else.
