Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said this week, he has no plans of imposing new COVID-19 restrictions on the state.
“The Governor will not lock down and hurt families who can’t afford to shelter in place for 6 weeks,” DeSantis’s office said in a statement, “Especially not for a virus that has a 99.8% survival rate. One area of concern is Assisted Living Facilities.”
On Wednesday, mayors of six Florida cities urged the governor to take aggressive and immediate action to stop the sudden spread of COVID-19. “The positions that the governor has taken thus far have made our jobs really difficult,” said St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman.
“We understand the economic impact that potentially some of these orders could have but we’re also trying to look at this from a long-term basis as opposed to short term,” said Kriseman. “If we don’t deal with this now, the economic catastrophe that we are facing will be worse if we have to go to a complete shutdown.”
Kriseman was joined by the mayors of Hialeah, Miami Shores Village, Sunrise, and Miami Beach. This group made four specific recommendations, and all agreed on the governor’s plan on keeping the economy open.
- Implement a statewide mask mandate
- Increase contact tracing and use a Covid tracking app’s developed by Google and Apple
- Allow cities and counties to be able to enhance local measures, such as additional penalties for not wearing masks
- Restore state testing facilities to full capacity
We have reached out to the governors’ office and will update this story when we get a response.
