A Florida man convicted of brutally beating two brothers to death with a hammer and slitting their throats with a fillet knife, been sentenced to death by lethal injection.

On Friday, Judge McGillin upheld a jury’s death penalty recommendation for Mark Wilson, convicted murderer of two Melrose brothers in 2020.

The Putnam County Sheriff said the crime scene inside the Bakers’ home on Aug. 26, 2020, in Melrose, was one of the worst he’d ever seen.

Wilson was convicted of beating Tatyen and Robert in the head with a hammer and then slitting their throats with a fillet knife.

Wilson was arrested, charged and found guilty of murder by a jury late last year.

The same jury unanimously recommended the death penalty.

“This will not bring back Robert and Tayten Baker, but it does close the door of uncertainty the family has lived through these last two and a half years,” Sheriff H.D. ‘Gator’ DeLoach said. “Our hearts are broken for the family. There will never be enough to right the terrible wrong this monster did to these children and this family, but if anyone deserved the death penalty, it is Mark Wilson. We want to thank the Seventh Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office, State Attorney RJ Larizza, and the jurors for seeing this through to completion. I especially want to thank our detectives, deputies, and victim advocates who put their heart and soul into this case to bring justice for these two boys.”

“We know there will be appeals, but today is a win for those who fight for justice, and I personally cannot wait to have this waste of existence vacate my jail and be delivered to death row at the Florida state prison in Raiford,” DeLoach said.

“The evidence of torture and extreme cruelty and the murder of Tayten Baker is self-evident. The blood trail starts at the end of the pool table. There’s a large pool of blood in that area. It’s evident the assault commenced here. The blood trail extended around and under the leg at the end of the table, strongly suggesting that Tayten was trying to escape from the murderous assault. Tayten’s hand has a defensive wound consistent with the conscious attempts to defend himself from the knife. The blood trail there continues for several feet almost at the other end of the table where Tayten’s body was found. The trail strongly suggests he was crawling away from the assault. The handprint on the wall indicates that he is alive and again strongly suggests he was reaching from his cellphone, which was plugged in near the handprint,” the judge said. “Finally, the abrasion to his face revealed that when the assault occurred, he was face down as the defendant struck him over and over again.”
