A Florida man has been arrested after running from the sheriff’s office in a stolen car and running out of gas.
According to investigators, on Saturday, March 26, 2022, Deputy Robert Young, with Marion County Sheriff’s Office, observed a stolen vehicle in the 2800 block of SE 52nd Street and followed it to the parking lot of the Circle K gas station at 5201 S Pine Avenue.
Santiago Lemus, 37, who was driving the stolen vehicle, attempted to hide from Deputy Young by parking behind the gas station.
Once Deputy Young entered the parking lot, Lemus drove away at a high rate of speed and returned to SE 52nd Street. A traffic stop was initiated and Lemus failed to stop. He fled for several minutes before the vehicle ultimately began to slow down.
Deputy Young attempted a P.I.T. maneuver, but Lemus maintained control of the vehicle. The vehicle rolled to a complete stop a short distance away and it was discovered that the vehicle had run out of gas.
Lemus was taken into custody and advised he fled because he had a warrant.Lemus was arrested for Fleeing to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer (Sirens and lights activated with high speed or reckless driving), Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Driving with a Suspended License (DWLSR), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Failure to Appear – DWLSR (the warrant).
“He was given a ride to the Gold Star Hotel, where he is held with a $19,000 bond,” said Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
