A Florida man has pleaded guilty to assaulting a Veterans Affairs (VA) police officer at the Lake City VA Medical Center. Jeffrey A. Sager, 55, now faces a maximum penalty of eight years in federal prison.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on February 13, 2024, when Sager entered the medical center and locked himself inside a triage room. He then proceeded to verbally abuse a nurse who was present in the room. The nurse triggered a silent alarm, prompting VA police officers to respond.

Sager refused to comply with officers’ orders to open the door. When officers gained access to the room, Sager attempted to flee, running down the hallway. An officer caught up to Sager, but he resisted arrest, leading to a struggle that ended with both of them on the floor.

During the altercation, Sager kicked the officer in the shoulder, causing a dislocation and fracture. Other officers arrived and were able to subdue and apprehend Sager.

The case was investigated by the Lake City VA police and the Osceola National Forest Service. Assistant United States Attorney Brenna Falzetta is prosecuting the case. A sentencing date for Sager has not yet been set.
