Donald Lee Whitaker, 53, will spend the rest of his life in prison for intentionally running over and killing his fiancée following a domestic dispute in 2022.
Collier County Circuit Judge Elizabeth Krier sentenced Whitaker to life in prison today, following his conviction of second-degree murder by a jury last October.
“This sentence represents the unwavering commitment of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office to hold those who commit domestic violence and other violent crimes accountable,” stated Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk.

The tragic incident unfolded on November 29, 2022, around 8:40 p.m. at the 1100 block of Dove Tree Street in Golden Gate Estates. Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) deputies responded to reports of a possible domestic disturbance and a woman who had been run over by a vehicle.
Upon arrival, deputies found the victim lying in the roadway, with a minivan idling nearby. Witnesses reported seeing the victim crying and in a semi-fetal position. A Good Samaritan stopped to offer assistance, but the victim declined. The witness then called law enforcement.
Moments later, Whitaker accelerated the minivan and ran over the victim. Witnesses saw him exit the vehicle and attempt to move her. A witness intervened, urging him not to move her due to the severity of her injuries, and stayed on scene until paramedics arrived.
