A 47-year-old Florida man was arrested Thursday after setting his ex-girlfriend’s belongings on fire and possessing a stolen firearm.

Jeffrey Neil Hammond of Scout Key, Florida, was charged with grand theft of a firearm, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, and making a bonfire too close to a residence.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was called to Scout Key at approximately 4 p.m. regarding a disturbance. Hammond and the 54-year-old female victim were at the scene.

There was a fire containing female clothes, cosmetics, and other items burning approximately 25 feet from a residential trailer.

The victim told deputies that Hammond would not let her gather her belongings and proceeded to set them on fire.

She also said Hammond was in possession of illegal firearms. Hammond admitted owning firearms and stated they were all inside the residence.

Deputies located six rifles and a handgun one of which — a Weatherby 257 Magnum rifle — was reported stolen out of North Carolina.
