First-time unemployment claims in Florida jumped last week, with the state seeing its highest number since October 2022.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Labor issued a report that estimated 8,709 initial unemployment claims were filed in Florida during the week ending June 8, up from 7,060 during the week ending June 1.

Florida has averaged 7,164 claims over the past four weeks and 6,204 claims since the start of the year. The four-week average is the highest since the period of the weeks ending Oct. 22, 2022, to Nov. 11, 2022.

During that period, 9,337 claims were filed during the week that ended Oct. 22, 2022. Florida had a 3.3 percent unemployment rate in April. The Florida Department of Commerce will release a May rate on June 21.
