Bucking a national trend of rising unemployment claims, Florida saw a decrease in new filings for the week ending June 29th.
First-time unemployment claims in the state dipped slightly for the week ending June 29th, marking the first time since May that claims fell below 7,000.
The report shows an estimated 6,749 new claims filed last week, down from a revised count of 7,307 claims the prior week. This bucks the national trend, which saw an increase of 4,000 claims to 234,000 for the same period.

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity remains optimistic. “There are still many open positions across various industries in Florida,” says department spokesperson Lisa Hernandez. “We encourage job seekers to use our resources, like job training programs and career fairs, to connect with potential employers.”
While the latest claims data is a welcome improvement, Florida’s economic future remains uncertain. Recent federal interest rate hikes and rising inflation could dampen economic activity and potentially lead to job losses in the coming months. The Florida Department of Commerce is expected to release a more comprehensive unemployment report for June on July 19th.
