The Florida House of Representatives is taking on the complex issue of college athlete compensation, with a focus on name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights.

House Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami, announced the formation of a 21-member workgroup on Wednesday to delve into the legal, financial, and practical implications of NIL compensation for college athletes.

The workgroup, comprised of members from the Education & Employment Committee, the Higher Education Budget Subcommittee, and the Civil Justice & Claims Subcommittee, will spend the next week examining:

  • Legal Rights of Athletes: The legal rights of college athletes to profit from their NIL.
  • Responsibilities of Schools: The legal responsibilities of educational institutions regarding NIL activities.
  • Financial Impact: The financial impact of NIL compensation on public universities.

Representative Alex Rizo, R-Hialeah, will lead the workgroup, which is expected to convene next week.

This initiative comes as the issue of NIL compensation continues to evolve rapidly, with varying rules and regulations across different states and athletic conferences. Florida lawmakers are seeking to create a framework that balances the rights of student-athletes with the needs of educational institutions.
