In recognition of Crash Responder Safety Week (November 18-22), the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is celebrating the dedication of its Road Rangers and highlighting significant strides in roadway safety.

FDOT Road Rangers are often the first on the scene of traffic incidents, providing aid, clearing debris, and managing traffic flow to prevent secondary crashes. Their efforts, combined with enhanced training and safety measures, have contributed to a notable reduction in secondary crashes on Florida’s roadways.

“As experts in traffic incident management, FDOT’s Road Rangers and other crash responders put their lives on the line each day to keep motorists safe thanks to their quick response and efficient scene clearance,” said Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E. “These responders are a major part of the solution for creating safer roads through their reduction of secondary crashes, and FDOT is proud to continue establishing new technology and initiatives to ensure that these responders and all motorists make it home safely. We encourage everyone to join us in recognizing and appreciating the important role of these responders during Crash Responder Safety Week.”

Key achievements highlighted by FDOT:

  • Reduction in secondary crashes: Down from 492 in FY 22-23 to 426 in FY 23-24.
  • Enhanced training: Partnerships and programs to improve traffic incident management skills.
  • Improved safety measures: Advanced notification systems, truck-mounted equipment, and ongoing research into new technologies.

FDOT emphasizes the shared responsibility for roadway safety and urges drivers to:

  • Move over or slow down for crash responders.
  • Never drive impaired.
  • Avoid distractions.
  • Obey speed limits.
  • Stay alert.

By working together, FDOT and Florida’s drivers can create safer roads for everyone.
