Florida Highway Patrol Corporal Injured In I-75 Work Zone Crash; St. Petersburg Man Charged

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – A Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) Corporal was injured early this morning in a crash on Interstate 75 (I-75) involving a driver who entered an active work zone.

According to the FHP report, the incident occurred at approximately 2:48 AM. A Chevy Blazer, driven by a 50-year-old St. Petersburg man, was traveling northbound on I-75.

The location was near Milepost 254, which was an active work zone. Troopers say the work zone was clearly marked with arrow boards, signage, and orange cones with retro-reflective tape. An FHP Corporal was also stationary within the work zone in a marked Chevy Tahoe with emergency lights activated.

The driver of Chevy entered the work zone and collided with the rear of the FHP patrol car, causing significant damage to both vehicles.

The FHP Corporal sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local area hospital.

The driver, identified as Vaughn Charles Donaldson, was also transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. He was later released and arrested by FHP Troopers on charges of DUI, DUI Property Damage, and DUI Personal Injury.
