The Florida Gulf coast is experiencing typical summer fishing patterns with hot temperatures and afternoon thunderstorms. Despite the heat, anglers are finding success with various species inshore and offshore.

Inshore:

  • Redfish: Redfish action is hot around the bays, beaches, and everywhere in between. Anglers are reporting schools of redfish in many common fishing areas.
  • Snook: Snook are still active, especially around beaches, bars, and mangrove islands.
  • Mangrove Snapper: The mangrove snapper invasion is in full swing! You can’t go anywhere inshore without finding these tasty fish ready to bite.
  • Tarpon: While the tarpon season is winding down, some silver kings are still hanging around, providing thrilling fights for those lucky enough to hook one.

Offshore:

  • Grouper: Red grouper season is open, and anglers are reporting good catches around the reefs and wrecks.
  • Mackerel: Mackerel are back in good numbers, both in the bay and along the beaches.
  • Sharks: Shark fishing is excellent, with blacktips and bonnet heads being common catches.

Bait:

Baitfish are abundant right now, making it easy to find the right size for whatever species you’re targeting. Live shrimp, pinfish, and threadfin herring are all working well.

Tips:

  • Fish early or late: The best fishing times are often early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun is less intense.
  • Watch for thunderstorms: Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer, so be sure to keep an eye on the weather and seek shelter if necessary.
  • Use sunscreen and stay hydrated: It’s important to protect yourself from the sun and stay hydrated while fishing in the Florida heat.

Overall, the fishing in the Florida Gulf is good right now, with plenty of opportunities to catch a variety of species. So get out there and enjoy the summer fishing action!
