The fall fishing season is officially kicking off on the Gulf Coast, and with it comes some exciting opportunities!
While red snapper season closed on August 31st, today marks the opening day for several other prized species, including gag grouper.
Inshore:
- Redfish: Still a solid bet inshore, especially around docks, mangroves, and oyster bars. Live bait like shrimp or pinfish is working well, as are cut bait and artificial lures.
- Snook: Season reopens today! Look for them in the passes, around bridges, and along mangrove shorelines. Live bait or topwater lures are good choices.
- Trout: Action is picking up as the water cools. Target them on the flats with live shrimp or soft plastic jigs.
Nearshore/Offshore:
- Gag Grouper: Season opens today! Head to the reefs and wrecks for your chance to catch these tasty fish. Live pinfish or frozen sardines are popular baits.
- Amberjack: Also opens today! These powerful fighters can be found near reefs and wrecks. Live bait or large jigs are the way to go.
- Gulf Red Snapper: Although red snapper season is closed, there are three-day weekends from today through November 1, 2024, offering opportunities to catch these beauties.
- Kingfish and Spanish Mackerel: Trolling near the surface with spoons or live bait can produce some exciting action.
Tips & Reminders:
- Check regulations: Make sure you are familiar with the current fishing regulations for your target species, including size and bag limits.
- Safety first: Always wear a life jacket and be mindful of weather conditions.
- Respect the resource: Practice catch and release whenever possible, and handle fish with care.
Overall, the fall fishing season is off to a promising start on the Gulf Coast. With a variety of species biting, there’s something for every angler to enjoy!
Tight lines and happy fishing!
